Engineering Intended Civil Engineering
My name is Myles Leo de Jongh. I am a freshman at Purdue University hoping to complete a degree in Civil Engineering. I am originally from Detroit, Michigan and have a love for design and giving my community. I plan to use my engineering degree to improve challenges that many people are faced with throughout the world such as food, water, and housing insecurities. Although community service is a core part of my high school’s curriculum, my parents impressed upon me at a young age that giving back to the community positively impacts our community and, as global citizens, we have a responsibility to lift up those who are underserved and bring people together. I have acquired math, science, critical thinking, and data-entry skills. I look forward to developing transferable problem-solving and leadership skills in college. My career aspiration is to use my engineering degree to develop innovative ways to improve the social and economic conditions of the Metro Detroit community.

I would be a wonderful fit for the ambassadorship because previously in high school, I served as a member of the executive board of the leaders of tomorrow ( the present black student union at Brownsburg High School) and not only did I serve as a member of the executive board, but I also helped in finding the organization. Currently, at Purdue I hold the position as the NAACP vice president of my chapter that I also played a key roll in reinstating last school year. During the duration of my sophomore year I also served as the treasurer for the black student union and the financial and programs Director for the African student Association. I heavily involve myself in the black community because I care about the progression of people who look like myself, and have similar backgrounds in spaces where we are not traditionally welcomed. I aim to make my people comfortable and bring them to new heights. I’m creative I’m a great team player and I have a lot to offer. I would be a great fit for this position and would be more than excited to help build something bigger than myself!

The Black community at my university and have served as a voice for our Black student population in many ways. Additionally, I'm someone who has always enjoyed "having my seat and many tables". Since high school, I've been as involved as I can with clubs and extracurriculars that affect my peers and I or allow me to make some kind of difference in my community.
